Miami-Dade Fire Rescue inspectors commence fireworks sweeps


(MIAMI, July 2, 2014) – In an effort to ensure public safety this Independence Day, the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department (MDFR) will be conducting fireworks inspection sweeps on Thursday, July 3, 2014 starting at 11 a.m. throughout Miami-Dade County. Inspectors will be visiting locations where fireworks are sold to make sure vendors are properly certified by the state and selling only legal fireworks.

MDFR inspectors will also be on hand to talk about the dangers of using illegal fireworks for your backyard show. “The safest and most enjoyable way to see fireworks is to attend a show conducted by trained professionals,” said Fire Marshal Alan Cominsky. “The dangers associated with consumer fireworks are too high and not worth the risk of an injury.”

According to statistics by the National Fire Protection Association, emergency rooms across the United States treated an estimated 8,700 people for fireworks-related injuries in 2012. Out of all the injuries reported, 57 percent of firework-related injuries were burns, while 18 percent were contusions or lacerations. The risk of fireworks injury was highest for young people ages 15-24, followed by children under 10. Additionally, sparklers, fountains and novelties accounted for 25 percent of fireworks-related injuries in 2012. These incidents highlight the dangers faced when exposed to illegal fireworks, or when legal fireworks are handled without proper instruction or supervision.
